About me

My name is Joshua Grippo. I love to play football. I plan on going to college for secondary education and then also coach football. I like to hang out with my friends when i go back home. School is easy for me and i enjoy school so thats why its no hassel.

Learning Profile

1. During the time I have spent in student connect; we have gone over many subjects that have influenced the way I do things in school. One thing that helped me out was have the librarian came and showed us what resources we could use to help us research topics. She showed us on the butler website links such as Ebsco and LexisNexis which are good, trustworthy websites to use for research. Another thing that we talked about was alcohol abuse among college students. We watched a movie about a girl who was binge drinking and wound up dying from it. This opened my eyes to what that sort of stuff can do to you and opened a door for me to make a better judgment call. Another thing we did was to find out what kind of learners we were. We did these worksheets and assignments that helped us find which type of learning style best fits our learning ability. A final thing that we did was completed a career plan sheet. It showed me what careers I am interested in get paid, what hours are required, and the requirements that are needed in that career. This will help me decide which career that I would like to pursue in the future.

2. There are many strengths I have as a learner that help me do my best in school. First I can communicate with others well. In the class we did many group activities which were easy for me to do. I like to lead the discussion and make sure that everyone has the chance to suggest and idea. I also like to express my ideas toward the subject and build on others’ ideas. Another strength I have is that I am an auditory learner. I hear things that the teacher is talking about and usually remember what they say. If I forget to write something in my notes, I can usually remember what was said and then write it down later. I think I would be helpful to a new student in the class. I would express to them not to be shy and to express their feelings towards certain ideas. I would tell them to pay attention to what the teacher has to say and to take notes because what we talk about will help you during your academic career. I show them the resources we have on the butler website so that when they do research , they have a trustworthy search engine to use when doing research. Hopefully these tips would help the student do well in the class as well as their other classes.

3. Unfortunately I have more weaknesses than strengths as a learner. One of my biggest weaknesses is procrastination. I will put a homework assignment off to the very last minute because in my mind I feel that I have better things to do. Then I always have to rush around the night before to get it done. This adds a lot of stress to my plate but I never have fixed the problem. Another weakness I have is that I have a hard time doing a reading assignment. I hate to read and will do anything to shy away from reading. When I have to read something I will put it off and usually will never read the assignment. In the long run this hurts me because I could use the book to study and take notes and I choose not to. Homework usually takes up most of my time. I will spend a lot of time on homework usually cramming it in all at the last minute. I need to fix my procrastination problem. If I would do my homework a little at a time I would not have to rush at the end. If I could fix this, it would solve many of my stress problems which are school related.

4. I learned a lot in this class that will help me in the future. I learned now how to manage my time. This has been a big problem during my academic career and now I have learned techniques to fix my problem. I also learned a lot about resources I can use to help me complete research with reliable information. One of the biggest resources is the eBooks. You can look at book online so you can find a book on your topic and read the book online in the comfort of your room. One thing that I can do now that I couldn’t do before is managing my time. I now have information on how to manage my time and how use my time wisely. This will help me so much in the future. I realized that the information in this class is really helpful. When I first heard of this class I thought that I was a joke and I would breeze through it. I know realize that this class is really helpful and I have benefitted from this class. The most important skill I learned again was how to manage my time wisely. It was the most significant to me because this was the biggest thing I struggled with. Now I have tools to help me fix the problem.

5. Many of the subjects were relevant in the class. The most relevant was how to manage your time. The second one is the resources butler has to offer me as a student to help me with school. The third would be my career plan. The fourth would be my learning style. The fifth would be Academic honesty. The moving on binge drinking effected me the most. It really opened my eyes on what can happen to me or my friends if we drink too much. Listening to the girls family and friends talk about what happened really changed my perspective towards parting and alcohol. Another thing that helped me in the class was finding out the resources butler has to offer. When the librarian was showing us all the resources, I realized that they would help me a lot. I have used them on many occasions since then on research and they have helped tremendously. An assignment that was not so relevant was speed reader. To me it helped a little bit but it didn’t really change the way I read. It did help me how to read faster but didn’t help me to want to read. I have never liked to read and I need something to help me enjoy reading.

6. This course for me helped a ton. There were many things that I learned that will help me become a better student and how to excel in school. Now I have the tools that will help me fix my weaknesses and build on my strengths. I don’t think that any of the material covered should be dropped. All of the materials helped me out in different ways and help everyone in different ways. One thing that would benefit students would to learn how to research. Many students know what resources to use but don’t know how to find what they are looking for. So this would help out tremendously. Learning how to manage your time should defiantly be kept. Many students struggle with this and it will benefit them to know how to manage their time. Maybe the speed reader could be dropped. I don’t think that one day of working on reading skills is enough to really improve someone’s ability to read. Nothing really needs to be added. I like the hands on activities and the group activities. These need to stay because interaction with each other is very important. I think that you should conduct the class in the same way. You made the class fun and I enjoyed doing the blogs. It is nice to incorporate the internet into the style of the class.

7. Students getting ready to take this course should come into the class ready to learn something new that will help them become a better student. They should not come into the class, thinking it is a joke, and try to breeze through without soaking up the information. New students should come to class with a positive attitude and not with a negative one so that they can learn as much as they can. They need to realize that this class is just as important as any other class and that this class will help you with your other classes. There are three things that you can do to stay sane in the class. The first is to do the blog as the assignments are handed out. This way you don’t wait till the last minute and add stress to your work load. The next is not to be afraid to share your ideas. There are a lot of group interaction assignments. Learning to communicate with a group will help a bunch. And finally, do the reading assignments. By reading the chapter the teacher assigns, you will be ahead and understand what the teacher is talking about instead of being confused.

8. All the stuff I have learned in this class will help me a lot. I think now I will be able to work harder in school and work and be able to get a head. Most of the things I learned will help me take away a lot of stress I put on myself. This will help me relax and do the best I can. I think the biggest thing that I have learned is how to make better discussions. Now I don’t wait until the last minute to do something. In work, this helps me get a head so that I won’t have so much to do at the end of my shift. In school, I will be able to get a head in class and not have to rush to get things done at the end. Finally, seeing the video of the girl that died from binge drinking helped I make decisions while I am in an environment in which this stuff is going on. I now know that this can really kill you and it shows me the effect it can have on others when a tragedy like this occurs. I am really glad I took this class because it has benefitted me more that I would have thought.

Butler Resources

Jessica is going through a hard time right now. She has just broke up with her boyfriend, her parents might get a divorce, and she might be pregnant. She has a lot of stress on her plate. To help her out she could talk to a councilor about her problems. She could research online to find a site to help her and inform her about teen pregnancy. She could also search online to find a site to help her cope with the loss of her boyfriend. Divorce stresses out every kid. She could also talk to some one about this and how to deal. Butler also has many good resources such as ebsco, lexisnexis, and proquest. She could use these sites to find out how to cope with the problems she is facing.

Academic Honesty

Many students do follow the rules of schools by not cheating on tests and assignments but not all do. There are many reasons many students choose to be dishonest in school. One reason is that students find that cheating is the easy way out. They can just copy something and claim it as their own so they don't have to do the work. They think that the teachers won't find out and to them they have better things to do so it saves them time. Another reason is the student is feeling stressed. When they get a test and think that they know everything on the test and find out they don't. They want to get a good grade so they look on someone Else's paper to see there answers and copy them. Another reason especially in college is a student on scholarship needs to pass twelve credit hours to keep their scholarship. They cheat off of others to maintain a good grade and to pass the class. Athletes will often do this so they can keep their sports scholarship. Unfortunately most teachers allow athletes to do this and so the athlete will continue to do this. The definition of plagiarism is coping someone Else's work and claiming as your own without giving the credit to the author. Many students plagiarise on essays to save time or so they can get a good grade. Many times though they get caught so they should have done the work. This way they won't get into trouble and they could go to the teacher and recieve help.

Academic Plan

I plan on going two years at butler but I do not plan on getting a degree at butler. After butler i plan on going to emporia state to get my degree in teaching. I have decided that I want to teach high school science and coach football. I have had many great teachers in high school that have influenced my decision. I have also played football since seventh grade and I have loved it. I always want to be involved in football some how so I figure after I play college ball I will coach so I can stay in the football program. My purpose for going to college is to get a degree in something I will be happy to do for the rest of my life. My senior year of high school, I realized that this is the environment I want to be in after I graduate. I then decided that being a teacher would be the job I want. The science field I am going into is Physics. To me physics is the most interesting field of science. Physics deals with how the universe started and how it works. Everytime I went to class I was blown away. This is one of the hardest class of science but is the most interesting to me. I will love to teach this to high school kids and then I will aslo get to coach football. I want to do these things to help change a kids life. With football I can teach young men how to become better men and teach them values that will help them out in thier future.

Coping with Change

The biggest change I have gone through in the past year would be moving out of my house and going to college. I am used to being around my mom all the time and now I am on my own and have a lot more responsibility. Now that I have moved out, my friends and I are not in the same place. Now we have to call each other and see when we are all going to be in town. One of the biggest changes is the responsibility that I have acquired. I now have to get up on my own to go to class. I have to do my home work with out any one telling me to do it. So that would be the biggest change I have had to go through this past year. Change is a necessary part of life. If things were always the same than life would be predictable and boring. Change also helps us figure out who we are. Change is hard for me because the outcomes are not predictable. It's uncomfortable because it is new to me and I don't know what is going to happen. Changing something is like taking a risk which is out of my comfort zone. When you do something out of your comfort zone you are likely to be nervous or scared. One thing that has caused me anxiety is coming to a new school and not knowing anyone. You hope that you can fit in with new people and that you won't make a fool of yourself. Again it is out of your comfort zone being in a new place with new people.

Communty Service

School Violence is a problem all across America. The biggest cause of school violence is bulling. Bullies pick on the weak minded and constantly harass them until they can not take the harassment any more. Once these kids are pushed to the max they tend to act out in violent ways. Solving this problem is not easy but it can be prevented. Teachers sometimes witness this harassment and ignore it and hope it will stop but unfortunately these kids need the teachers help. Parents are also a problem. Kids learn what is right and wrong at an early age. If the parents act violent all the time then the kids learn that this kind of behavior is right and will tend to be more violent. Schools are trying to prevent school violence. Many schools have added metal detectors and security cameras to help detect a possible threat. Teachers tend to intervene more so it helps the student deal with the situation in a positive way. There is not much i can do to help prevent the problem. There are some things i can do though like treat others the way i want to be treated. When i see someone being harassed i can help the student out by listening to them and try to give them good advice. I could tell a teacher or councilor what is going on and they will be able to help the situation. Unfortunately this problem will never be solved. Kids will always harass one another but we all can help to slow down the problem.
